I got married a couple of years ago to a Turk in Turkey. Our mariage didn't work out, and so I got divorced here in Canada, without my ex's consent (which is not required here). I have spoken to some Turkish friends here who tell me that in order for my ex to divorce in Turkey, he needs my consent, and that if I don't appear in court, or send a representative, he will not be able to divorce me, even though he has a copy of the Canadian divorce decree. Is this true? It would seem pretty ludicrous if this were the case. I have a Turkish friend here who has been trying to divorce her husband for 4 years now, but the husband does not want to divorce, and the Turkish courts keep on denying her divorce request even though they have been living apart for 4 years.
