Izmir Game and Toy Museum
The newly opened Game and Toy Museum is situated up on Varyant- with a great view over Izmir Bay.
As one leaves the metro from the Yeni Karamursel Dept Store entrance, with the sea in front of one- go left and after a few steps, cross the road and ask a taxi to take one there- for 5 TL. One may walk but it’s pretty steep. It’s nicer to walk back down after looking around the museum and go right into Kemeralti- the labyrinth of lanes that forms the old Bazaar.
BTW there is NO access for wheel chairs. The steps outside and stairs inside are very steep and awkward. This is because it’s in a very beautiful, old higgledy piggedly style building.
The entrance fee is 5 TL, no museum cards accepted as it is private.
The owners have made a good effort to achieve a pleasant, nostalgic place to visit. If you’re quick, you can get around in 10 minutes! But there are some attractive toys on show:
Karagoz puppets, tools and screen.
Wooden games including draughts and table football.
Forts and soldiers from England and Germany – 1950s-1970s.
There are tiny scenes arranged in groups such as : Wild West, Fire Fighter, Noah’s Ark, Farm, Transport, Space, Musical Instruments and Shops.
There’s a complete box of play bricks from 1880 and a complete set of Snow White and the 7 dwarfs models from 1900.
There’s a clockwork Pink Panther holding some symbols!
There’s a Dick Tracy squad car.
There are a couple of lovely old dolls houses and some soft toys as well as a few dear old teddies.
Worth a visit- even if it’s only a quickie!

........we had roots that grew towards each other underground, and when all the pretty blossom had fallen from our branches we found that we were one tree and not two.
