How NOT to Win Friends and Influence People

I wasn't sure where else to post this so I'll put it here......

On a recent trip to a local market I witnessed the following: An Expat woman from a certain non-English speaking European country which I won't name further (but it starts with a "G") was picking out cherries from the bin when a Turkish woman picking out cherries next to her made a friendly comment along the lines of "these kind of cherry are very nice in a cake that I like to serve with tea".

The expat snapped back at her "I don't understand!" witthout even looking up from the cherries she was sorting through like a chipmunk on speed and shooed the woman away like you would a fly. The look on the Turkish woman's face was heart-breaking and what could have been the start of an interesting conversation, an exchange of recipes and quite possibly a new friendship just went "POOF !"
